Diminishable Parameterized Problems and Strict Polynomial Kernelization

چکیده
Kernelization—a mathematical key concept for provably effective polynomial-time preprocessing of NP-hard problems—plays a central role in parameterized complexity and has triggered an extensive line of research. This is in part due to a lower bounds framework that allows to exclude polynomial-size kernels under the assumption of NP * coNP/poly. In this paper we consider a restricted yet natural variant of kernelization, namely strict kernelization, where one is not allowed to increase the parameter of the reduced instance (the kernel) by more than an additive constant. Building on earlier work of Chen, Flum, and Müller [Theory Comput. Syst. 2011] and developing a general and remarkably simple framework, we show that a variety of FPT problems does not admit strict polynomial kernels under the weaker assumption of P 6= NP. In particular, we show that various (multicolored) graph problems and Turing machine computation problems do not admit strict polynomial kernels unless P = NP. To this end, a key concept we use are diminishable problems ; these are parameterized problems that allow to decrease the parameter of the input instance by at least one in polynomial time, thereby outputting an equivalent problem instance. Finally, we study a relaxation of the notion of strict kernels and reveal its limitations.

Kernelization Lower Bounds for Finding Constant Size Subgraphs
Kernelization is an important tool in parameterized algorithmics. The goal is to reduce the input instance of a parameterized problem in polynomial time to an equivalent instance of the same problem such that the size of the reduced instance only depends on the parameter and not on the size of the original instance. In this paper, we provide a first conceptual study on limits of kernelization f...
متن کاملPolynomial Kernels for Weighted Problems
Kernelization is a formalization of efficient preprocessing for NP-hard problems using the framework of parameterized complexity. Among open problems in kernelization it has been asked many times whether there are deterministic polynomial kernelizations for Subset Sum and Knapsack when parameterized by the number n of items. We answer both questions affirmatively by using an algorithm for compr...
متن کاملWeak compositions and their applications to polynomial lower bounds for kernelization
We introduce a new form of composition called weak composition that allows us to obtain polynomial kernelization lower-bounds for several natural parameterized problems. Let d ≥ 2 be some constant and let L1, L2 ⊆ {0, 1}∗ × N be two parameterized problems where the unparameterized version of L1 is NP-hard. Assuming coNP 6⊆ NP/poly, our framework essentially states that composing t L1-instances ...
متن کاملOn the Kernelization of Global Constraints
Kernelization is a powerful concept from parameterized complexity theory that captures (a certain idea of) efficient polynomial-time preprocessing for hard decision problems. However, exploiting this technique in the context of constraint programming is challenging. Building on recent results for the VERTEXCOVER constraint, we introduce novel “loss-less” kernelization variants that are tailored...
متن کاملLossy Kernels for Graph Contraction Problems
We study some well-known graph contraction problems in the recently introduced framework of lossy kernelization. In classical kernelization, given an instance (I, k) of a parameterized problem, we are interested in obtaining (in polynomial time) an equivalent instance (I ′, k′) of the same problem whose size is bounded by a function in k. This notion however has a major limitation. Given an app...
